The Media and Climate Change Observatory, based at CU Boulder

The Media and Climate Change Observatory, based at CU Boulder

The Media and Climate Change Observatory (MeCCO) was founded at the University of Oxford in 2006, but was moved to CU Boulder when Max Boykoff joined the faculty in 2009. MeCCO has grown to become a network of two dozen collaborators across ten institutions who monitor 125 sources (television, newspapers and radio) monthly in 58 countries, 13 languages, organized into seven different regions around the world. From this work - in partnership with CU Libraries - MeCCO provides 25 downloadable datasets and 50 downloadable figures along with open-access explainers/summaries of the month's more prominently covered climate change stories. From this foundation, many MeCCO collaborators have utilized these open-source data to publish several journal article and book chapters (as many open access as possible).
