In this Workshop*, participants will be introduced to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for Research Computing, with a focus on transitioning from traditional campus HPC environments to scalable, cost-effective cloud workflows

This hands-on, 3-hour workshop will guide researchers through launching and managing AWS compute resources, storing research data in Amazon S3, and implementing practical cost-control strategies. Attendees will gain experience using both the AWS Console and command-line tools, explore modern access methods such as AWS SSO and EC2 Instance Connect, and learn how to avoid common cloud cost pitfalls.

Special emphasis will be placed on cost optimization for research, including the use of Spot Instances (50–90% savings), S3 lifecycle policies and budget alerts.

Prerequisites

• Laptop with web browser and terminal access

• Basic command-line familiarity is helpful but not required

Following the workshop, in-person participants are invited to stay for informal discussions with the AWS Solutions Architect to ask questions and get guidance tailored to their individual research workflows.
